How to read open interest

Open interest is the total value of derivative positions that are currently open. It rises when new positions are created and falls when positions are closed. Unlike volume, which counts every trade, open interest tells you how much money is committed to the market right now.

Rising versus falling

Rising open interest means new money is entering and traders are building positions, which tends to confirm the conviction behind a move. Falling open interest means positions are being closed and leverage is leaving, which often lines up with a move running out of steam or traders taking profit. Reading it next to price is where it gets powerful: rising open interest with rising price is a strong trend, while rising open interest with flat price can signal a build up before a larger move.

The CoinGyaan approach

We sum current open interest in US dollars across several venues to get a picture closer to the whole market, and we measure the 24 hour change from venue history so it is a real delta. Because venues report size differently, we normalise each to dollars, so our absolute total can differ from other trackers while the direction stays honest.

Frequently asked questions

What is open interest?

It is the total value of open derivative positions in the market. It grows when new positions open and shrinks when they close.

Is rising open interest bullish?

Not on its own. Rising open interest shows conviction and new money, but whether that is bullish or bearish depends on price direction and funding. It is context, not a signal to act.
