How to read the funding rate
Perpetual futures use funding to keep their price tied to spot. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts, which tells you traders are leaning long and are willing to pay to hold that exposure. When funding is negative, shorts pay longs, so the lean is bearish. The size of the rate tells you how strong the lean is.
Why crowding matters
Funding is most useful at the extremes. Very high positive funding means the long side is crowded and paying a lot to stay in, which often precedes a sharp unwind if price stalls. Very negative funding means shorts are crowded, which can set up a squeeze higher. Balanced funding near zero suggests no strong positioning either way.
