How to read the Fear and Greed Index

The index compresses market sentiment into a single number from 0 to 100. Low readings mean fear, when traders are nervous and selling pressure builds. High readings mean greed, when buyers are confident and chasing price. The scale breaks into five bands: extreme fear from 0 to 24, fear from 25 to 44, neutral from 45 to 55, greed from 56 to 75 and extreme greed from 76 to 100.

Why sentiment matters

Sentiment does not predict price on its own, but it frames risk. Markets tend to overshoot in both directions. When everyone is fearful the easy selling may already be done, and when everyone is greedy the market can be fragile. That is why many investors treat the index as a contrarian tool rather than a signal to follow the crowd.

The CoinGyaan approach

We show the live value, the direction it is travelling and how far it has moved over a day, a week and a month, so you see momentum in sentiment and not just a snapshot. Extreme readings get a contrarian note because that is where crowd behaviour and opportunity most often diverge. The underlying value comes from a public sentiment index and the interpretation is ours.

Is extreme fear a buy signal?

Not on its own. Extreme fear is where contrarians start researching because downside may already be priced in, but it is context for your own analysis and not financial advice.
